Home Sweet Home

This is another blog where it is mostly pictures. They say a picture is worth 1000 words, so I will spare you most of mine this time:)

Another picture from of the front of the house, but I have added a few more plants out there now.

Picture of the family/living room.

I am standing in the same spot from the picture before for this one of the front entry way, but just angled the other direction from the family room.

Again, I have just rotated my position slightly to get a picture of the kitchen. It's all pretty much one big open space in my little home. It's nice and cozy.

Here is the view of the dining room and the open area I took the previous pictures from.

Bathroom in the hallway.

Master bedroom.

Master bath. Not my dream master bath, but I'm not complaining either!

The little green room. It's like a re-creation of my childhood bedroom. Ha ha, I'm sure my guests will love it! Soon it can be a baby's room for my little nephew that will be here soon (I'm sure he'll appreciate the girlie pastels)! I can't wait to meet him and get to babysit and have him over to play:)

One corner of the blue room... aka the office/overflow area housing lots of pictures to hang, or maybe not if I decide I don't want them all up on the walls.

Bill paying area. I have been spending much time here lately.

Small corner of the patio and back yard.

Looking back and the house and the patio along with the door to the garage.

Other end of the house and yard.

Last angle of the back yard with the setting sun.

Painting

Well initially I was telling people that I didn't think I'd need to paint the interior of the house at all. It turns out the more I was there, the more the tan neutral colors were boring me and the house seemed to dark and bland. So I went from not thinking I wanted to paint, to painting every room in the house a new color except for the 2 bathrooms and I didn't need to paint the ceilings. It's much brighter in there now and I must thank my Mom and Grandma for their good eye for color and helping me pick out such beautiful colors. Dad, Uncle Mike and Steve all helped to make it happen. Mom cleaned my kitchen for me and Laura kept us all well fed. It was definitely a group effort! Here are a few snapshots of the new colors and the work it took to get there:)

Here is Steve using creative means to be able to reach the edges at the top of the wall.

A nice snap shot of random junk that is collecting at the house. This is also the new color up on the walls that replaced a light colored tan and a more chocolate color of brown. The paint changes color depending on the light and the shadows... it can look tan, green or almost yellow but it works and I like it!

Me concentrating hard on not dripping paint on the woodwork or floor. But as you can see, I always manage to end up with lots of paint on ME rather than on the wall.

I thought Steve was on to something, so later in the day I found myself up on top of the fridge in order to do some touch up work.

Here is a little bit of an overall view of our work. I love color! SOOOO much better than tan.

Well that is it for now. Maybe next weekend or the week after I will actually move into the house! Lots of long hours getting the house cleaned up and painted so far, but I think I will be happy later that I took the time to do it all. Monday we'll hopefully get the carpets clean and then I can move on to being the happy home owner and slow down on how much of my income I donate to Home Depot on the weekend. We'll see. That's it until my next adventure! Stay tuned:)

My First Home!

WELCOME HOME TO ME! This is me posing outside my front door:) After two days of ownership, I have already met neighbors from 5 surrounding houses and been invited to the neighborhood July 4th block party. They are a friendly bunch.

As of June 26, 2009 I officially became a home owner! It's still taking a little getting used to, but after a long weekend of hard work, I'm starting to actually believe the house is mine. These aren't the best pictures, but they give you an idea of what things look like. I was busy so I didn't take much time to take pictures...

The front yard is torn up because I have a new sewer now and the roof should look remarkable as it is brand new as well. Someone living here prior to me thought it was a brilliant idea to put two layers of composite roofing on top of the original wood shake roof. As a result, my inspection showed up lots of rot. But that is now fixed and wonderfully new.

The kitchen with various moving supplies laying around.

Living room and fireplace with a pile of window coverings left behind I decided I didn't want to leave hanging. The whole interior is going to get a fresh coat of paint coming soon. That will be fun next weekend! And hopefully cleaning carpets too:)

Picture of the extra bathroom.

Back corner of one side of the yard. This is a before picture. It looks much better after I spent all afternoon tackling the weeds back there, and I won!

Back side of the house. That fencing created a mini doggie run for the previous owners. Since I have no dog and no purpose to close off that part of the yard, I tore down the fence and it opened things up quite a bit. And I discovered lots of little stepping stones overgrown by grass. So I dug those up to be placed elsewhere someday where they can be seen and used.

Here is the garage in all it's glory. Saturday morning was spent cleaning the house and garage (which had roofing materials ALL OVER the place). I tackled the interior while Steve tackled the garage and I was glad to be inside the whole time with an excuse to stay out of the mess that was there before. In the afternoon, we cleared out Steve's storage unit and moved it into my garage...the pile has already shrunk in size to about half what is seen here. Now with garbage, recycling and yard debris cans all stuffed full, I am eagerly awaiting Thursday garbage day to clear all that out and fill them all back up again. And home ownership begins.

So far it's been a lot of hard work but fun making whatever decisions I want to about the place. So long to apartment life:)

Chrissy's Bridal Shower

This post I'm just going to stick to photos and captions. All the cake photos are a result of me thinking it might be fun to make a mini wedding cake for the bridal shower... It turned out ok, but not like the perfection I had visioned in my head. Oh well, it tasted good:)

Here we have the bottom layer of the cake cut in half and raspberry filling applied!

I thought at this stage it looked like I had huge peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for cakes, with the crust cut off.

I finally got all three cakes frosted and the detail work in purple done. This is the base layer of the cake again.
Here is the top layer of cake. Chrissy even got to take it home with her:)

The next morning I added the green vines and some last minute clumps of grapes and the edging kind of frosting and it was completed. Didn't look at all like what I had pictured in my head, but I guess it turned out ok for my first try!

Side view...

Chrissy and a six pack. She does love a good beer, so it was an appropriate gift:)

Chrissy opening her presents with her three bridesmaids looking on. From left to right Emily (Groom's Sister), Jolie and Cecily (Brides's Sisters).

Cecily made Chrissy a beautiful ribbon bouquet for her to use as her fill in bouquet during the rehersal for the wedding.

The lovely bride and me showing off my 4 hours of hard labor lol.

Can't wait until Aug 8th when we get to celebrate your wedding day!!!! California here we come :)

Belated Mother's Day Celebration

For Mother's Day this year, Mama wanted to have an overnight trip with her girls. So after much deliberation and careful analysis of 3 different calendar schedules we were miraculously able to find a night to get away and have a girls weekend! Off to Cannon Beach we went :)

It just so happens that the weekend we were there was the Annual Sandcastle competition. I had never been to be able to see it in person, so it was kind of fun to see how the heck they are able to create what they do. So although we had many more fun things happen during our little vacation, I am dedicating this entry to the sandcastle masters and giving you a little glimpse of what we saw. We were on the beach a couple hours before the final judging, so none of the pictures are of the final masterpieces, but I think they are still quite in impressive.

Here is a view down the line of competitors.

A castle with a modern twist?

Crater Lake:) I wish I had seen that one finished!

I am pretty darn sure this one was going to turn into a train. I never knew that it took some seriously constructed molds with very packed down sand to build these creations... they have much more dedication that I do for sand castle building.

The kids section! Adorable is all I have to say.

The "Master" class sandcastle builders.

The beach became a parking lot! I'd never seen that happen before here in Cannon, but I'm glad they let people park there because parking in town was a MESS!

Memories

So even though this trip was FOREVER ago, I thought I'd throw some on here just for good measure. Plus I'm ready to go back for more adventures:) Anyhow, my sister and I took this trip right after I graduated in 2005 from OSU and I can't believe it's been that long and how much life has changed since we took this trip. She has gotten married and is now 23 weeks pregnant. I survived 2 years of Nursing School and lived to tell about it. Lisa has switched jobs, I have 2 years of being and RN under my belt and both of us are trying to navigate the real estate world to buy houses!

I hope you enjoy this trip down memory lane:)

We flew in to London and forced ourselves to go check out the city all day long. We got in to London around 7am after our forever long flight. Let me just say jet lag along with a new city and the most confusing bus system ever did not equal a positive London experience. We can laugh about it now, but we struggled that day in a big way. We were SO excited to get to France where things were so much simpler to us! This is me acting awake posing in front of Big Ben and you can see The Eye of London in the background.

Lisa and I mastering the art of the smooshy face at the 3rd deck on the Eiffel Tour. This was our first full day of being tourists in France.

What a glorious day to visit Paris:)

Here is a photo of the National Cemetary over In France where a lot of soldiers from WWII are buried. The next photo down is one of the beaches in Normandy where the last battle was fought. We were on a tour bus for the day, thankful we weren't having to navigate the back roads and we learned so much more from our tour guides than we would have on our own. Money well spent.

Here we are at Sacre Coeur, another beautiful day, yet extremely hot outside. We had already climbed endless stairs to reach this point. Then Lisa thought it would be great to climb to the top of the building, below I look happy but I was so hot and sweaty and not excited to be climbing even more stairs. That was a good workout that day. Ahhh, good memories.

View from our little room at the bed and breakfast we stayed at in Cinque Terre.

Pretty sunset in Italy. Gorgeous country and town, but impossible train system. We were lucky to make it to our destination at all.
Back in Paris, in a different part of town, this was our last Hostel we stayed in where Lisa's friend Amy joined us for our last days in France.

We went on a tour of castles for Lisa's birthday! It started out as a pretty day but in true June 30th fashion, it ended in rain. But not anybody can tour a castle for their birthday! When we returned to our hostel that evening, Amy was there to greet us with 3 little chocolate cakes to celebrate.

This is museum day. All day at museums. I think we tackled the Louvre, the MOMA, and Musee d'Orsay. We used Rick Steves' travel guides to help us conquer these huge tasks and see the best of what was there and what we wanted to see. There was no way we could see it all. Below is a picture of how the day went. Amy read the directions to us of how to navigate the museum, it even tells you which way to turn and then we would stop, she would read to us about what we were looking at and then move on. This picture is classic of exactly what we did all day that day.

Lisa and I outside Versailles on our last day of touring! This place is HUGE!

So after a full day of walking through the castle and the grounds and eating ice cream ( I think we had ice cream EVERY day on that trip some time between 2-3 in the afternoon) we layed down in the grass, listened to the Victorian music they had playing throughout the grounds and people watched. Amy took a little nap and we just enjoyed relaxing and being in France
So that is it! That is my trip down memory lane. I wish I had taken SO many more pictures. It felt like a lot when we were there, but not so much any more. Someday I'll make it back to France and Scotland and Ireland and so many more places I still want to go:)
